Hajibey Fortress

вул. Маразліївська, 1, Одеса

The arcade with the two Quarantine towers and the remains of the Andriyivsky bastion are all that remain of the defensive structures of the Odesa Fortress. The earthen fortress was established by General Alexander Suvorov in 1793–1794 after the destruction of the Turkish fortress Hajibey. In 1807, the Quarantine was built nearby, featuring a long wall with two towers at its ends, while two more walls descended toward the Quarantine harbor. The fortress was active for less than twenty years before being declared indefensible and handed over to the Quarantine. Today, the site of Suvorov’s fortress is occupied by the Chornomorets Stadium in the Central Park of Culture and Recreation named after T. Shevchenko. Remaining landmarks include part of the arcade of the Quarantine wall, the adjacent Powder Tower, the separate Mortuary Tower (which once housed a morgue), and the Andriyivsky bastion, where the Alexander Column was erected in 1891. From the arcade, visitors can enjoy a picturesque view of the seaport.
