Soborna Square

Соборна площа, Одеса

Soborna Square is considered the main square of Odesa. It is located in the very center of the city, at the intersection of Preobrazhenska, Sadova, and Deribasivska streets. Locals affectionately call it “Soborka.”

Initially named Preobrazhenska Square in 1828, it became known as Soborna Square in the 1830s, a name it held until the early 20th century. During the Soviet era, the square underwent several renamings: from 1920 to 1941 it was called Red Army Square, and from 1946 to 1991 – Soviet Army Square. Its current name is derived from the Transfiguration Cathedral (Spaso-Preobrazhenskyi Cathedral), which stands at its center. The original cathedral was demolished in 1936 and later rebuilt in 1999.

In the northern part of the square stands a monument to Prince Mikhail Vorontsov, erected in 1863 (sculptor: F. Brugger, architect: F. Boffo). Nearby, visitors can explore the small “Art Market,” where paintings, handmade crafts, and souvenirs are sold.
