Pryvoz is often called the soul of Odesa. It’s the place where you can truly experience the city's vibrant spirit. The market dates back to 1827, when it was part of the Old Market and specialized in selling delivered goods — hence the name "Pryvoz," which means "brought-in." The first permanent structures didn’t appear until the late 19th century. Since then, the market has grown from a small trading spot into one of the largest bazaars in Europe.
While locals sometimes say that Pryvoz has lost some of its original charm, it remains full of character for visitors. The vendors are famously witty and charismatic — so much so that jokes are told about them, and they've been featured in movies. There's even a monument here to the legendary fish seller Sonya.
And according to legend, the infamous swindler Yakiv Pilerman hid a treasure somewhere in the market — gold coins and diamonds — which has never been found. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the lucky one to discover it!
