Monument to Duke de Richelieu

бул. Приморський, Одеса

The monument stands on the Primorsky Boulevard, right in front of the Potemkin Stairs, offering a stunning view of the Black Sea and the Marine Station. Every visitor to Odesa must visit this spot to experience the city’s spirit, immerse themselves in its life, and feel its unique atmosphere.

Duke de Richelieu participated in the siege of Izmail and settled in Russia five years later for an extended period. In 1803, he became the city’s mayor, and from 1805 to 1814, he served as Odesa’s governor-general. Locals affectionately called him “our Duke” and considered him the city’s founder, although Odesa was already eight years old by then. Thanks to his efforts, the city grew into a major trading port. After the Bourbons returned to power, he went back to France and served as prime minister under Louis XVIII.
